“We hear incredible stories everyday here at Faith, Hope & Charity.” You may remember that phrase from our Annual Campaign; you may also remember Justina.  As donors and friends, we want to share with you an inspirational story that was recently shared by Michele Maguire, Resident Coordinator here at Faith, Hope & Charity.

Michele works with Justina, and has done an amazing job recently of working with staff & community to create an opportunity for her to participate as a member of the “White Caps,” our Storm Lake Swim Team.  Swimming is a favorite activity for Justina, and becoming part of the team was a dream come true.  The following story of how this young woman with a dream, along with a dedicated staff and a community came together to make a difference.  In Michele’s words…

In 2002, Faith, Hope & Charity's Auxillary Board, now our Special Friends Program, was created to pair members of the community with children here in our care facility. At that first meeting thirteen years ago, forty volunteers signed up to open their hearts for a special child. Tracee Dierenfield was one of the forty present at that first meeting, and she has been sharing her heart and her family with Danielle ever since.

During a recent visit, the Dierenfield family sat down to share their experience in the “Special Friends” program.  As Russ, Tracee, Grace and Holly accompanied Danielle to our family room, it was obvious that they are much more than friends. They are family. In a lively conversation filled with lots of smiles and laughter, Danielle and the Dierenfield’s shared their story…

“Mary Sorenson-Ludwig [former Development Director at FHC] got a group of us together for a meeting, wanting to line up a friend for each child, just for birthdays and Christmas,” Dierenfield says.  “I asked to be paired with someone that would be a good match for Grace, who was five at the time.”  Another five year girl, Danielle, was paired with the family and their friendship began.

When you host an outdoors event in the middle of July, you can expect it to be hot.  Thursday, July 21st brought extreme heat warnings that may have kept some folks inside, but the overall turnout for Faith, Hope & Charity’s Taste of Storm Lake was more than we expected.  With overall sales close to our yearly average, we were pleasantly surprised by the number of folks who came out for a dinner of smoked ribs, baked beans, chips, pop/water and ice cream.

While we had quite a number of meals to-go, we were pleased to see some folks take advantage of the canopy shade and the wonderful music provided by “Ball & Chain,” the husband and wife musical team of Mick Polich & MaryBeth Andrews.  Considering that we had originally planned to have them perform at our Glow on the Green event and postponed due to heat, it was a bit ironic to say the least!  We are truly grateful for the wonderful music!

We also owe a very big THANK YOU to the wonderful sponsors who help make this event successful each year:  Hy-Vee Foods, Inc., Frito-Lay, MetaBank, Chesterman Co., Blue Bunny Ice Cream, Snyder BBQ & Charlie Larson.  Helping us keep folks in the shade this year were State Farm Financial Services, Stacey Eddie ChFC and the Buena Vista County Pork Producers.  Thank you all for your generous support!

Glow on the Green has GLOWING Results

We are so thankful to the Storm Lake and surrounding communities for the generous support of our 2nd Glow on the Green golf tournament & silent auction. Through sponsorship, team registrations, raffles and our silent auction, we were able we were able to raise just over $3,000 for the children and families that we serve.

We kicked off the evening with a turkey fillet dinner, and participants as well as spectators joined in the raffle and silent auction while we waited for the sun to go down.  At just after 9PM, teams left the clubhouse to move on to assigned tee-off places, and the tournament started with a shotgun start.  With a 50% increase in participation this year, we were very pleased with the turn-out.  For those choosing not to golf, the view from the deck at the clubhouse was pretty spectacular.
